Time Scale in Shastras

The Time-Scale According to the Mahabharata

The Mahabharata (Shanti Parva, Moksha-dharma Parva, Chapter 231) describes a highly detailed system of time measurement. Sage Vyasa explains to his son Shukadeva the journey of time starting from the smallest instant and extending to the vast cosmic cycles of the Yugas and Brahma’s lifespan. Bhagavad-Gita 8.17 also echoes the same vision while describing Brahma’s day.

1. Smallest Units of Time

Vyasa begins with subtle units of time:

- 15 nimeshas = 1 kashtha

- 30 kashthas = 1 kala

- 30 kalas + 3 kashthas = 1 muhurta

- 30 muhurtas = 1 ahoratra (one 24-hour day)

2. Human Time Cycle

- 30 ahoratras = 1 month

- 12 months = 1 year

- One year is divided into Uttarayana and Dakshinayana

3. The Time of the Pitris

- 1 human month = 1 day (ahoratra) of the Pitris

  - Krishna paksha = their night

  - Shukla paksha = their day

4. The Time of the Devas

- 1 human year = 1 day (ahoratra) of the Devas

  - Dakshinayana = their night

  - Uttarayana = their day

Thus, 1 divine year (Divya-samvatsara) = 360 human years.

5. Duration of the Four Yugas

Yuga Durations in Divine Years:

- Satya Yuga: 4800

- Treta Yuga: 3600

- Dvapara Yuga: 2400

- Kali Yuga: 1200

Converted to Human Years (divine year × 360):

- Satya: 1,728,000

- Treta: 1,296,000

- Dvapara: 864,000

- Kali: 432,000

One Mahayuga (Chaturyuga): 12,000 divine years = 4,320,000 human years.

6. Human Lifespan in Each Yuga

Mahabharata describes decreasing lifespan by one-fourth in each Yuga:

- Satya Yuga: 400 years

- Treta Yuga: 300 years

- Dvapara Yuga: 200 years

- Kali Yuga: 100 years

7. Decline of Dharma

Dharma stands on four legs in Satya Yuga:

“Satyam caiva krita-yuge…”

In each Yuga:

- Treta: Dharma on 3 legs

- Dvapara: Dharma on 2 legs

- Kali: Dharma on 1 leg

8. Brahma’s Day and Night

- 1 day of Brahma = 1000 Mahayugas

- 1 night of Brahma = 1000 Mahayugas

A full day-night = 2000 Mahayugas.

Conclusion

The Mahabharata presents a profound vision of time—from the smallest instant to cosmic cycles. The reduction in human lifespan and gradual decline of Dharma mirror the cosmic transitions through the Yugas.
